Lichtenberg begins where my journeys and walks in Berlin usually end: beyond the ‘Ostkreuz’ station on the circle line. This is where the great emptiness begins. There weren’t many people on the streets here. The distances between both people and buildings are large. You have space and you allow yourself space. I was just as solitary when walking across greens between tower blocks as I was in allotment gardens or on private streets. At the edge of the city, Lichtenberg is all field and village. The pictures recount all this.
