Feger/Stumpf

During our residence period in Lichtenberg, we focussed particularly on the former headquarters of the East German Ministry for State Security (MfS or Stasi) on the corner of Frankfurter Allee and Ruschestrasse. We were interested here in the architectural presence of the building complex in the district of Lichtenberg and in the way this historical location has been dealt with and its current state. In our intervention with a mobile sound installation, we aimed to draw attention to a part of this history and to react to the aura of this site. The sound collage is made up from recordings of numbers stations that were used around the world to transmit intelligence or military information. Some of these recordings are taken from the GDR and Soviet Union. In addition, we installed an oversized representation of a Soviet one-time pad that was previously used to decipher coded messages.
