>wo liegt die erinnerung<
by Rasso Rottenfusser
Model and information on a sculptural situation
Based on Mies van der Rohe’s “Revolution Monument”
at the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery
23 March to 30 April
In April 2018, Rasso Rottenfusser was a guest at the Lichtenberg Studios and was tasked with designing and, if possible, realising a project relating to the district of Lichtenberg.
During his tours and research, he came across various memorials at Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery, including a memorial to the so-called “Revolution Monument” by the architect Mies van der Rohe, which was destroyed between 1933 and 1935 (it was built in 1926). This memorial to the “revolutionaries of the labour movement”, which was remarkable in its form and design at the time, was the starting point for reflecting on how we deal with commemoration and remembrance in private and public life today.
Remembrance is often overlaid with the passage of time by our own, other and foreign images and ideas and is subsequently reassembled from fragments.
The planned temporary installation takes up this idea and should draw the viewer’s attention and pose questions, such as what is visible from which perspective, where do we start – and where is the goal of our remembrance? Is there a goal in remembrance?
Although the realisation of the art project, which is only scheduled to last a few weeks, does not appear possible to date for structural reasons, the Lichtenberg Studios are giving visitors to the café the opportunity to find out more about it in an exhibition of the 1:20 scale model.
Backgrounds, sketches and further information on this art project >memorialitäten 11/4.8-IX. aggregat< at the entrance to the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery are also on display.
At the opening on 22 March 2019 at 7 pm, Friedrich C. Burschel will provide insights into the creation of the art project and explain Rasso Rottenfusser’s working methods.
