I collected acorns in Berlin, and used the nuts to make seed bombs; I threw 117 seed bombs in locations that I found, while exploring Lichtenburg on foot. My aim was to establish at least one oak tree in Lichtenburg.
The acorn is the nut of the oaks; each nut usually contains one seed in a tough brown shell. Seed bombs are seeds wrapped in a layer of earth; the bombs can be thrown into areas that may be difficult to access. An oak tree can be introduced to any land by throwing or dropping seed balls onto the ground.
For the residency project, I wanted to explore nature as a material in my creative practice. I like the idea of working with trees because they can live for such a long time. I am obsessed with time-based artworks, throwing one seed bomb can change an environment for centeries.
To help me select locations for the seed bombs, I used the following guidance. I wanted the locations of seed bombs to be left undisturbed, receive good sunlight, and not be too close to other seed bomb locations, or existing trees.
The documentation for the artwork is a list of coordinates: roughly noting where each seed bomb was thrown, so the sites may be revisited.
