Public space in many parts of Berlin is very strongly marked by the work of graffiti crews. The main purpose of these tags, which generally consists of three letters, is to attract attention among the local graffiti scene. However, the meaning of these messages will not be understood by most of the general public outside of this scene. Crews can increase their prestige within their scene by spraying their name onto walls and other surfaces in public areas. During my residency in Berlin, I wanted to find out which graffiti crew had the most tags in Lichtenberg. It turned out that the GRZ crew was the most active. In an act of targeted provocation of these self-proclaimed “kings” of Lichtenberg, I began to cross through all of their works that I came across, using red paint.
